TOP 15 Incohérences Dragon Ball Super

TOP 15 Inconsistencies in Dragon Ball Super

When you're dealing with a franchise that has lasted as long as the Dragon Ball series , you can be sure to run into temporal issues over time. We can even say that each saga, each arc, whether in the form of an animated series, a film, a video game or even a manga, presents a whole series of inconsistencies. 🙄

Whether they come from an oversight on the part of Akira Toriyama and his team (given the number of years this franchise has been around and the gargantuan amount of content it contains, it's completely understandable) or They come from the fact that the creators also chose to redefine elements throughout the episodes, you will often find recurrences and breaks in continuity. 🔗

To reference all of the anomalies present in the entire saga would take too long, you think. That said, Dragon Ball Super and its recent film are unique in this sense because they massively break the continuity and order of the original series. Discover with us the TOP 15 biggest inconsistencies in Dragon Ball Super ! 😵

15. TIME TRAVEL

Goku Black Rosé

The concept of time travel tackled by Toriyama is quite unique compared to that of Back to the Future , but Dragon Ball Super confuses us with this new notion brought by Zamasu, aka Black Goku . So here's the problem: time travel in Dragon Ball has always been too complex and a little too difficult for us to understand... 🧳

When DBS added the notion of multiverses , all of which contain alternate timelines, time rings , and more, things became so complicated that we barely understood what was happening as the episodes progressed. Frankly, we don't have time to talk about all the inconsistencies, but quickly watching Future Trunks which explains time travel in the Dragon Ball Z saga and then watching Black Goku's arc in Dragon Ball Super , you will understand... Or rather should I say that you will not understand, but you understand the subtlety! 😂

14. THE AFTERMATH IN DRAGON BALL

Goku Beyond

It's easy to forget that in the early episodes of Dragon Ball Z, the main character (Sangoku) is often defeated on earth and spends a lot of time in the afterlife. The Afterlife, also called " The Other World ", is executed in such a unique and fun way that it's easy to dull the pain of Goku's demise with each defeat. 🤼

This divine place itself undergoes some minor conceptual changes throughout the cartoon, such as the circumstances of body preservation, but Dragon Ball Super makes major, jarring changes to it. There are notably several specific versions of Hell, alternative recording stations (instead of it being King Enma) and many other rather incongruous things. 🤔

13. TRUNKS HAIR

DBS Trunks

Well, let’s talk about hair. As you know, hair care is a bit of an “emblem” of the Dragon Ball saga. Trunks ' hair color story is bizarre and longer than it should be, and his blatantly contradictory "conclusion" makes it much worse. Basically, for the majority of Trunks' appearances in the franchise, his hair had always been light purple, but in Super, he went on a hair splurge and we discovered him with blue hair! 😨

To be more specific, Future Trunks has blue hair, while Young Trunks has purple hair. Stranger still, in the 90s, some Dragon Ball Figures of Trunks (before we even knew who he was) had blue hair instead of purple hair, so this issue is decades old, and we'll probably never know about it. the real answer... 🕵️‍♂️

12. THE BARDOCK DESIGN

Bardock

The latest film in the Dragon Ball Super franchise: Broly , brings major changes to canon and character designs, and Bardock is the biggest success of all. Portrayed as a ruthless Saiyan who cares little for his own son, Goku, the original Bardock is a terrible person who decides to resist tyranny in defense of his race and, in the final moments of his life, takes selfish pleasure in doing so. that his son ends up avenging him. 👊

The Broly movie transforms Bardock into the equivalent of Superman's father, while changing his design to make him a much gentler and kinder powerful character, who will work to save Goku because he loves him. While this is nice, it makes Bardock a much less interesting character, and, once again, there is already a better version of this tale in the form of Superman! 🐱‍🏍

11. THE ORIGINS OF GOKU

Goku Little

We're staying on our nostalgic streak to now tell you the specifics of Goku's origin, which has undergone some minor (and major) changes in the past. You can also see our article on the Origins of Son Goku , which summarizes his story more generally. 👶

When we first met the character, he was a strangely strong child with a tail, who was found as a baby by Grandpa Gohan. Sometimes baby Goku is found in his space shuttle, other times he is not. Sometimes he is said to be violent before he passes out, while other media shows him as a good boy from the start. In fact, the only true fact comes from the fact that Goku was indeed a Saiyan ... until Broly appeared. 🌪

In the movie DBS: Broly , Goku is not a baby. He's a child a few years old, and he certainly knew his parents and maybe even his brother. Although he probably forgot about them by hitting his head, this age change in the film was completely unnecessary and breaks continuity for nothing. 💫

10. THE AGE OF BULMA

Bulma

Bulma is one of the oldest characters in Dragon Ball (and the Dragon Ball manga too) . Sure, she was cool when she went on an adventure with little Saiyan Goku to fetch the crystal balls , but it's really her impressive level of genius that makes this character shine. 🧠

There is something that isn't quite right about Bulma, however, and that's her age. We specifically refer to the fact that Bulma herself does not seem to know how old she is. She claims to be 38 years old in the DBSuper films, but she is actually 45 , if we check her official date of birth. Of course, she could be hiding her true age, but we think that's probably just a mistake on the author's part... 👵

9. THE EXISTENCE OF THE GODS OF DESTRUCTION

Existence of the Gods of Destruction

First, an uncomfortable fact: Dragon Ball GT might still be canon, despite the fact that Funimation insists otherwise and fans think it's not. There's a lot of room on the timeline before we reach the age of the GT saga, so nothing contradicts the events of GT yet (aside from a few small changes)... well, other than the hype around the divine powers and the nature of the universe. 🌖

Basically, the Super Saiyan God and his related forms, Beerus, the Angels, the multiverse itself, and more are never mentioned once in DBGT. Obviously they haven't been invented yet, but the fact that Super consciously takes place before the GT saga, when they could have easily made it a comeback, makes us think Toriyama really wanted to tie things up between them, and if that's the case, he's already in a lot of trouble... 🙄

8. TRANSFORM INTO SUPER SAIYAN

Super Saiyan Transformation

Even casual fans will mention Goku 's explosive transformation to reach the Super Saiyan stage as one of their favorite elements in the franchise. This new transformation results from the rage he harbored towards his new enemy Frieza was the perfect catalyst for his titanic transformation. Likewise, Vegeta 's burning desire to surpass super warrior Goku at all costs led him to his own transformation into a Super Saiyan, while Gohan 's internalized hatred was what helped him achieve his transformation into a Super Saiyan. Super Saiyan 2. 💪

These impressive transformations were linked to intense emotions and turmoil, and it was only by mastering them that our heroes were able to evolve... but the Super saga decides to throw all that out the window by saying that it All you have to do is find a tingling sensation on your spine and use it to transform... And that's how you deflate one of the most emotionally charged concepts in an entire franchise... 🤣

7. THE SIZE OF KRILIN

Krillin

Krillin was a great rival for Goku in Dragon Ball, but also a best friend to him and Son Gohan. His most striking features are, of course, his bald head, his noseless face, his Shaolin marks, his martial arts (thanks to Awesome Turtle) and, his size... or rather his lack of size. In fact, if you were a kid watching the show for the first time, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Krillin was a kid like Gohan! 🧒

But here's the subtlety about Krillin's small size when it comes to Dragon Ball Super: he's actually shrinking! Like, it shrinks considerably. In Dragon Ball Z, Krillin was just at shoulder height with his wife, but in Super, he is only at her waist height. Let's not talk about putting him next to his friend Piccolo either... It must be a mistake, but the size difference is so significant that we're shocked no one has corrected it since! 😅

6. THE EYES OF MAY

May Dragon Ball Super

Mai lives a truly tortured existence. An adult woman at the time of the original Dragon Ball saga, she was reduced to a child in DBS, with her companions suffering the same fate, and unfortunately continued to remain that way for decades. 🚸

The character is once again in the spotlight during Dragon Ball Super with Trunks, but there is one important difference in his appearance that creates a canonical error: his eyes. During Dragon Ball, Mai's eyes were blue, but they strangely turned black during her last appearances, without really understanding why. 👀

5. THE BEARD OF THE SAIYANS

Beard of the Saiyans >

A lot of things that are related to Saiyans have been carried over by the Super saga, and it turns out that the Saiyan facial hair debate has too. This question regarding their facial hair and even their hair in general has been around forever, but it's just addressed in a very curious way in this new anime. It is said that a "pure" Saiyan hair never changes, at least according to Vegeta . And yet, in GT, Vegeta ends up with a mustache and a very vintage haircut. Does this also mean that Nappa and the Saiyan Prince were also born with a mustache and a beard? 🧔

In fact, both Goku and Vegeta at one point sport beards in Dragon Ball Super, so they defy their own logic. Maybe the timeline was only specifically referring to the change in the appearance of their hair, but it's still a pretty weird thing to see in picture, and even weirder for us fans of these transformations! 😨

4. THE MERGE OF THE POTARAS

Vegeto DBZ

Fans were absolutely excited to see Vegeto make his return in Dragon Ball Super. This beloved fusion was last seen facing the villainous Majin Boo, but now we would see him facing a much greater threat, all while being supported by the divine wrath of Super Saiyan Blue .

While his moments in shonen ended up being really cool, Vegeto's fusion (the powerful instinct between goku and vegeta) was cut short due to his enormous power. This is a massive deviation from continuity regarding how Potara Fusions work, as they are meant to last indefinitely. This was also retconned in a very sloppy way, explaining that it is only permanent for Kaio masters. 🦻

3. THE ORIGIN OF SCOUTERS

Vegeta Over 9000

The Broly tie-in film offered some interesting alternate retellings of established lore regarding Bardock, the Saiyans, Frieza, and more. While there were plenty of interesting takeaways, one particular moment overlooked a major piece of what we knew about the Saiyans' history: their scouts. In the movie, Frieza and his father King Cold are the ones who gave scouter technology to the Saiyans, but in DBZ, their origins are very different. 💻

When the Saiyans and the Tsufuls were at war with each other on Planet Vegeta, the Tsufuls were clearly shown to be the ones who invented the scouters, these small portable computers that are worn on the ears. We can therefore assume that the use of scouters was adopted after their extinction. This is yet another example of a seemingly arbitrary change from the original canon of the series and manga, and it will leave us forever perplexed. 👓

2. THE HISTORY OF THE SAIYANS

History of the Saiyans

Toriyama can't seem to agree on the origin of the Saiyans, despite them being the most important race in the franchise. Did they come from somewhere else entirely before landing on Planet Vegeta ? Were they actually from planet Vegeta but evolved separately from the Tsufuls? Oh but wait, before there was planet Plant, before it became planet Vegeta. 🪐

What does Planet Vegeta look like? Did the Tsufuls create the technology and appearance of the Saiyan, or did it come from Frieza ? Did Frieza fear the Saiyans, or did Beerus tell him to blow up Planet Vegeta? Wait, we thought all Saiyans were actually wild warriors, but then why are there some that don't have tails? So some people couldn't transform into a giant ape? 🦧

It's true that there have been a lot of changes between the Z and GT series, but Super is just as guilty... and we still don't know why it keeps happening. 😵

1. Who sealed Old Kai in the Z Sword?

Old Kai

While Beerus is one of the best new characters added to the franchise, Toriyama and company seem hell-bent on dragging him back into events he hasn't participated in before, regardless of the damage it does to the originally established continuity. . We will return to other examples later, but a major inconsistency lies in the question of who locked old Kaiô Shin in the Z sword . 🗡️

In Dragon Ball Z, the old Kaiô Shin claims that the person who locked him in the sacred sword was much weaker than Majin Buu. In Super, he claims that Beerus did it. Is Beerus weaker than Majin Boo? Uh no. Certainly not. Why they felt the need to create this temporal continuity issue is beyond us, but hey, it's really the least problematic example as far as Beerus is concerned. 🕵️‍♂️

Dragon Ball Super

And There you go ! You now know the 15 main Inconsistencies in Dragon Ball Super . Categorized as true abominations, it should not be made a condemnation either, every fan agrees that an animated series relating facts, fights and the history of a ton of characters over such a long period can afford to benefit from some temporal inconsistencies...
