Qui est Chichi dans Dragon Ball

15 Things You Don’t Know About Chichi!

Chichi , Goku's wife, is one of the most beloved characters in Dragon Ball Z and there are probably a ton of facts you might not know about her! Chichi is probably not one of the strongest characters in the Dragon Ball saga, nor one of the most present. Indeed, Chichi is one of the many supporting characters present in the story of Dragon Ball Z and, to be completely honest, her contribution to the overall plot of the series more or less boils down to the birth of her children. 👩‍👦‍👦

However, Goku's wife - and Gohan and Goten 's mother - has been part of the iconic series and Akira Toriyama's anime since the beginning and she has a bit of a role as the long-suffering housewife on duty. of his situation. She was present during many significant scenes in the anime, although fans may have forgotten about it, due to all the intense fights and impressive transformations that often take up the attention.

Chichi proves to us throughout the saga that being married to the friendliest Saiyan in the world is not necessarily easy and there are many interesting and funny anecdotes surrounding the arc of her story. She also hogs the spotlight as a character in her own right in the manga, which many fans of the Dragon Ball anime may not be familiar with. So without further ado, here are our 15 new anecdotes about Chichi !

15. CHICHI IS A PRINCESS!

Chichi Princess

Fans who aren't familiar with the original Dragon Ball series may not know that Chichi is actually part of a royal family . 👑 Although it is quite well known that his father Gyûmaô also calls himself the “ox demon king”, this tall, imposing and tough man seems to be a man of modest means in Dragon Ball Z and certainly not of royal status. Indeed, if you go back to Chichi's childhood, and she and her father lived a very different life.

Gyûmaô was the ruler of Fire Mountain and the surrounding kingdom. Although he was originally an angry and aggressive king, Goku and Master Roshi helped him change his ways and the Saiyan gained the friendship of the country's princess: Chichi. As of DBZ, little information is revealed about Chichi's royal status and in Dragon Ball Super , it was even stated that Gyûmaô's riches were stolen by brigands, leaving him destitute. 💰

Despite the little-mentioned royal connection, it is interesting to think that if Gyûmaô had died in the series, Chichi and Goku might have become the king and queen of their own country!

14. SHE FIGHTED AGAINST EVERYONE IN HER FAMILY

Chichi fights dragon ball

For someone who seemed to hate her family's obsession with martial arts , Chichi still participated in her share of battles against those close to her. The first such instance occurred when Chichi faced her future husband at the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. 🤺

Later in theGarlic Jr. saga , Chichi also faced his son Gohan (albeit under the influence of the "Black Water Mist") . And also add to that that Chichi fought Goten as part of his training! This just goes to show that while Chichi can do her best to maintain a normal, respectable family and then try to fight to a minimum, she can't deny that fighting is ultimately a key part of her life! 🗝️

This perhaps relates back to the martial arts training she received from her father - another family member she had to train with - and proves that even though she doesn't have Saiyan blood like the rest of her family, Chichi secretly loves challenges!

13. CHICHI HAS A PURE HEART

Chichi Magic Cloud

Before learning to fly, Goku relies on his trusty magical cloud, the Flying Nimbus (or “Kinto-un”) to get around. Seeing that only a pure heart could truly be able to ride it, Goku took very few passengers on his magic cloud and Chichi was one of the characters who was offered such pleasure! ☁️

Naturally, this means that Goku 's future wife is just as good and kind as him - unlike Awesome Turtle , who gave Goku a magic cloud because he was too impure to use it himself. -even.

The other riders of the Kinto-un were the children of Goku and Chichi, Upa who lives near Korin Tower and Uub - the virtuous reincarnation of Buu. Chichi and Goku have had many adventures on the Flying Nimbus, including in a mini-arc at the end of the original Dragon Ball series that involved retrieving Chichi's wedding dress. 💨

12. GOKU’S AWKWARDNESS TOWARDS CHICHI

Goku and Chichi's wedding

It is fairly well known that Goku's solitary upbringing caused him to develop a naive attitude and this is particularly evident in his inability to differentiate between men and women, which is relatively impractical.

Bulma experienced similar treatment earlier in the series and the awkwardness was repeated when Goku met Chichi for the very first time, with Goku using his foot to check which set of genitals his new friend possessed. 🦶

Our dear Chichi initially responded angrily to Goku's highly inappropriate actions, but she also took this as a sign that the Saiyan had romantic feelings for her, implicitly rekindling a relationship that would later result in marriage and children. Considering the message this sends, it's no surprise that the scene was changed in some versions of the anime.

11. CHICHI HATES SUPER SAIYANS

Goku Gohan and Goten DBZ

Chichi despises Super Saiyans . She associates blond-haired warriors with “delinquents” who constantly fight when they should be working or studying. She will also be particularly upset when she learns that Gohan succeeds in achieving this form. Later, when Chichi's training allows Goten to become Super Saiyan, his resulting anger even deters the youth from revealing his transformation to others. 😡

Western fans may not realize, however, that Chichi's attitude towards the Super Saiyan transformation has its roots in Japanese culture . In Japan, a young person who dyes his hair - blonde in particular - is considered a sign of rebellion and delinquency. And so when Chichi first sees her sons sporting a new light-colored hairstyle, her negative reaction is partly because she believes them to have become unruly. 👱‍♂️

Fear of teenage delinquency isn't the only reason Chichi doesn't like this transformation. Indeed, it's also clear that she knows her children are going into Super Saiyan mode when they soon face a dangerous enemy.

10. WHO IS CHICHI’S MOTHER?

Chichi's mother

Unlike Gyûmaô the Ox Demon King , very little is known about Chichi's mother ( Chi Chi no Haha) and she is rarely mentioned, especially in Dragon Ball Z. Fans may not know that this character died tragically when Chichi was just a baby. ⚰️

This makes the importance of the wedding dress all the more symbolic in the mini-arc, as the garment originally belonged to Chichi 's mother who wore it during her nuptials to Gyûmaô. Although never appearing on screen in any significant way, the brief glimpses Chichi sees of her mother – via a partially obscured family portrait – show her very similar in appearance to her adult daughter.

The duo shares a similar fashion sense and both appear to sport the same long, straight, black hairstyle. You can also find theChichi Adult Costume right here. However, the most amazing thing about Chichi's mother is that she is small enough to sit in the palm of the Ox Demon King , which immediately raises a host of relationship questions.

9. CHICHI IS THE STRONGEST HUMAN ON EARTH!

Ox Demon King

The Dragon Ball series often makes gags about Chi-chi's supposed abominable strength, with Master Roshi even referring to her as the only person scarier than a Super Saiyan. This type of allusion is a common joke in the world of anime, where so-called dominant women are seen as defeating the strongest male characters in the series (like Nami in One Piece, for example) . However, in the case of Dragon Ball , the gag obscures the fact that Chichi could be a respectable fighter.🤝

As previously mentioned, Chichi was trained in martial arts by her father who himself was a student of the Turtle School. Although most of her fights take place through training, Chichi has demonstrated her strength both at the World Martial Arts Tournament and during her training with Goten and because of this, she could be considered the strongest woman on earth - or at least in the franchise. Although Videl could be another contender for the title, the two never fight, making it unclear who is stronger, so the mystery will remain unsolved! 😮

8. CHICHI AND GOKU’S FIRST DATE

Chichi vs Goku

Super Saiyan or not, romantic first dates can be difficult. And while most couples usually settle for something safe, like going for a drink at the local bar or a trip to the movies, Goku and Chichi opted for something a little different.

A flashback in Dragon Ball Z reveals that Goku and Chichi's first official date consisted of a friendly martial arts fight between the two youngsters. The idea was - naturally - Goku's, who suggested the activity after Chichi told him to choose the thing he liked doing the most. After some convincing, the duo took to the game and they had a relatively even battle, although this took place before Goku had even begun his training with Kamé Sennin . 🥇

Despite being an atypical first date, Chichi will still clearly show that she has good memories when she looks back on this one.

7. CHICHI’S APPEARANCES

Chichi and Goku

Filler episodes are a problem for many anime fans, but those unfamiliar with Akira Toriyama 's original manga series may be surprised by the amount of scenes with Chichi that aren't actually canonical with the rest of the saga. After her introduction in the Dragon Ball manga series, Chi-Chi only appears before the World Martial Arts Tournament as a young adult where she and Goku became engaged. 💍

This makes appearances of the character with the red ribbon rarer, only when new episodes need to be filled. And unfortunately for Chi-chi , this situation doesn't improve as the series progresses. The majority of fight scenes with Chi-Chi's presence take place in non-canon segments - such as in the Garlic Jr saga and when she dispatches some of Slug 's minions in Dragon Ball Z: The Namek Threat - and Goku's Wife n 'appears in Dragon Ball Super only to complain about her husband who obviously doesn't earn enough money. 💲

6. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CHICHI AND YAMCHA

Yamcha and Chichi

Yamcha may not have been a great fighter in the Dragon Ball franchise, but he certainly garnered a lot of success with the ladies. The professional baseball player's romantic relationship with Bulma before Vegeta 's arrival is also very well known to fans. But early in the series, he also had a semi-romantic exchange with Chi-Chi , although nothing ever actually happened. 🌹

When Chichi's distrust of outsiders caused her to attack Yamcha, the future Z-Warrior knocked him out. Upon realizing that he had just beaten the Ox Demon King's daughter, Yamcha immediately regretted his action and attempted to smooth things over by declaring his undying love for Chichi before running away at the first opportunity. 💕

Although she seemed flattered by his assertions, nothing developed between Chichi and Yamcha and, amusingly, she apologized to him after becoming engaged to Goku, probably still under the impression that he was loved.

5. CHICHI’S INTERPRETATIONS IN CINEMA

Chichi Jamie Ching

Everyone might want to try to forget this part of the story, but most Dragon Ball fans remember well the cinematic interpretation of their favorite characters featured in the movie Dragonball: Evolution . Well despite the fact that that of Chichi, played by Jamie Chung, is far from being the worst part of this film, it is still very far from an authentic adaptation of the character. 🎥

Fans may not know, but there are two other movie versions of Chichi in the annals of foreign cinema. An unofficial Korean film adaptation released in 1990 had characterizations much closer to those of the original and actually featured Chichi with her traditional combat helmet. A year later, a Chinese adaptation titled Dragon Ball: The Magic Begins featured a character called Jade who represented a mix between Chichi and another non-canonical female character. 🎞️

The scathing reviews of Dragonball: Evolution will likely deter film studios from attempting a new adaptation in the years to come, and so the list of Chichis is unlikely to grow any time soon.

4. WHERE DOES CHICHI’S ARMOR COME FROM?

Chichi Dragon Ball Armor

Before settling into the life of a housewife, Chichi's costume designs were much more distinctive, almost resembling a Saiyan's battle armor in appearance. This outfit was apparently inspired by the character Pola from Toriyama's older manga: Pola & Roid . Published in 1981 - three years before Dragon Ball - the intergalactic series featured a warrior named Pola, who hired the services of a frustrated interplanetary taxi driver called Roid and the duo set off on a mission to defeat evil. 🚖

Pola's character design sees her decked out in skimpy blue armor with pointed shoulders and a flowing cape, very similar to what Chichi wears in the original Dragon Ball. Although Toriyama has not officially confirmed that Pola inspired Chichi's look, the similarities are undeniable and it can also be argued that there are parallels between Pola and Roid's relationship and that of Goku and Bulma at the beginning of the the story of Dragon Ball. 🦾

3. CHICHI VS ZAMASU

Chichi vs Zamasu

For Dragon Ball characters, dying is an occupational risk, in fact you will know it if you have read our article relating the TOP 10 deaths in the Dragon Ball saga ! So Chi-Chi had already met her death - along with everyone else - at the hands of the evil Buu. She was of course resurrected by the Dragon Balls, but Chichi also meets a much more personal and unique death in one of the franchise's many alternate timelines. 💀

Those who haven't been following the new Dragon Ball Super series may not know that a villain named Zamasu brutally murders Chichi and Goten while possessing Goku's body. 🔪

Zamasu is a villain hell-bent on eliminating mortal beings, and he identifies Goku's body as the perfect husk to achieve this goal. Thanks to a warning from Future Trunks and a quick execution from Beerus , these events are averted in the main timeline, but that doesn't make the scene itself any less distressing for viewers.

2. HIS NAME HAS BEEN CHANGED IN SOME COUNTRIES!

Chichi and Goku

Chichi is hardly the first character to be forced to change their name for an international audience due to a translation that was a little too tendentious. For example, in France, Han Solo is called “Yan Solo” due to the fact that “Han” looked too much like “Anne”.

Viewers in Brazil and Portugal will therefore find Goku 's wife in Dragon Ball renamed Kika, rather than Chichi. Indeed, in Portuguese, “Chi-chi” literally translates to pee, somewhat skipping the maternal and caring characteristics of the character. 🚽

On a lighter note, Chichi in Japanese actually means milk or cow's udder, which will give Master Roshi the perfect excuse to perform some boob-related jokes. However, it is interesting to note that the name Chichi can also be used as a term to define “father” in Japan. Given these two translations, Toriyama could infer that the character is both the “mother” (milk) and “father” of his children due to Goku's absence and general lack of a sense of responsibility. .

1. CHICHI AND GOKU NEVER KISSED!

Goku and Chi-Chi Wedding

Goku may be clueless when it comes to ladies' codes, but he still has two kids. So we'll assume he understood the birds and the bees and the term “gathering the flower” at some point, right?! Well, not necessarily. A funny exchange in Dragon Ball Super sees Future Trunks chew a Senzu Bean and feed it to Mai with his mouth. 👄

Goku childishly remarks, “Wow Trunks, did you really put your mouth to his?” to which Vegeta exclaims “you’ve never done that?!”, then Goku responding “of course not.” 😲

Naturally, this raises questions about how Gohan and Goten were conceived and also what being married to Chichi means to Goku. Clearly, Chichi must have a high tolerance for her husband's whims because not only does he show a lack of affection by abandoning his family to train at every opportunity, but he also has difficulty showing his love for his woman with physical gestures.
