King Cold (コルド大だい王おう or Korudo Daiō, literally meaning "Great King Cold") is the leader of the Cold Force. Former emperor of Universe 7, he passed power to his son but continues to secretly rule the empire in the greatest secrecy. King Cold is one of the secondary antagonists of the Cyborg saga. He is a character with great power and it took a Super Saiyan to overcome him.

APPEARANCE OF KING COLD

The size of King Cold is different depending on the manga or anime. In the manga, Mecha Frieza arrives at the knees of his father who appears to be three times his size . In the anime the king is still smaller although he is considered the biggest villain in the Dragon Ball Z saga without counting the films. King Cold looks a lot like Frieza's second evolution but bigger. It has horns with lines on each side of its skull. The king with purple skin, which is very common among members of his race. He has dark blue battle armor in Dragon Ball Z but wears brown one in Dragon Ball GT. He is equipped with a long black cape , hanging on his red combat shoulder pads. 🔪

If his sons Frieza and Cooler have demonstrated an ability to transform to gain power, we have never seen King Cold transform. However, it is indicated in certain video games and in the Dragon Book that he is indeed the type of person to be capable of transforming but it is impossible to guess the exact appearance of a possible evolution. 🤔

BIOGRAPHY AND PERSONALITY

King Cold has a fairly calm nature and demonstrates elegant manners by having a certain appearance linked to his rank. He is not as cruel and sadistic as his son Frieza but displays a lot of arrogance while being known for his lack of patience. Despite his calm side, the king is hot-blooded and is capable of throwing fits of anger, especially when he learns of the possibility of his son's defeat. In Cooler's film , we learn from the latter that the king had a preference for Frieza who was always too spoiled . 😅

Cold, however, shows no qualms about wanting to replace Frieza with Trunks when his son dies. We can therefore assume that during Frieza's defeat on Namek, King Cold is simply angry because his galactic domination is now in danger.

The tyrannical king is blessed with remarkable intelligence as his role and function are unknown to all except his immediate family. He gives Frieza powers to better direct the Cold Force in the shadows. This is why few people in the universe are aware of the existence of Cold and his secret organization. 🤫

Despite the great confidence he has in his own power or that of his sons, King Cold is aware of the superiority of certain beings. This is mainly demonstrated in the film Resurrection of F when we learn that Cold advised Frieza to never challenge Beerus, the God of Destruction and Majin Buu.

COLD IN THE CYBORGS SAGA

At the end of the Frieza saga, King Cold is informed that his son is desperately fighting against a powerful warrior on the planet Namek. The king gathers a crew in his ship and immediately heads to the scene of the confrontation. Once he arrives there, he notices that the planet has been completely destroyed and begins with his men to look for his son among the debris. 💥

Impossible for him to think that his son could have died in the explosion, Cold explodes with rage and destroys one of the windows of his cockpit thanks to his telekinetic powers. This has the effect of dragging one of his men into the void of space. The King then adds that he himself will avenge his son if it ever turns out that he has been defeated.

After several searches, Cold's men end up finding Frieza's remains and bring them back to their planet. Once there, King Cold's scientists manage to reconstruct the Emperor's body with mechanical implants . Once Frieza wakes up, he explains to his father the existence of the Super Saiyan who almost annihilated him. 💀

After some research, father and son discover that Son Goku is on his way to Earth. King Cold suddenly proposes to destroy the planet from space but Frieza prefers to establish a Machiavellian plan in order to wreak his vengeance . The latter indeed wants to go to Earth first with the aim of massacring all earthlings in order to make the Super Saiyan suffer upon his arrival. In his plan, Frieza (who can now be called Mecha Frieza due to his numerous mechanical implants) is convinced that he will have his revenge on the Super Saiyan, especially with his father by his side. 👊

King Cold and Mecha Frieza eventually arrive on Earth and land in the northern wastelands . The Emperor receives permission to massacre the friends of the Super Saiyans and the men of the Cold Force are ordered to kill anyone who offers resistance. Trunks from the future appears and intervenes in front of the invaders. On Cold's orders, the henchmen attack but are quickly defeated by the defender of Earth. Trunks then transforms into a Super Saiyan , which surprises and frightens Cold and Frieza. 😨

The appearance of the Super Saiyan reminds Mecha Frieza of his defeat on Namek and then wishes to satisfy his revenge by immediately attacking. Trunks dodges and survives all of the Emperor's attacks, which arouses King Cold's curiosity.

Wanting to end the confrontation quickly, the Super Saiyan from the future uses his sword to cut Mecha Frieza into several pieces and then disintegrates the remains with a ki attack. 🔥

King Cold, not seeming to care too much about the death of his son , then offers Trunks to take Frieza's place to control the universe and even offers him planets. The latter refuses without hesitation but this does not worry Cold who is convinced that the Super Saiyan's great power only comes from his sword.

The tyrannical King asks his adversary to examine the famous weapon and the latter immediately accepts. Once the sword in hand, Cold strikes the young man from the future but Trunks blocks the blade with his fingertips without the slightest difficulty. The king fails to dominate his opponent and that's when the Super Saiyan fires a powerful energy beam at his opponent. The attack pierces King Cold in the chest, passing through his battle armor and killing him instantly . It is good to note that in the anime, the king does not die instantly and still remains sufficiently conscious to beg for his life, offering to the earthling, all the planets of the universe. Trunks refuses once again and finishes off King Cold with a blast of energy which impresses the members of Z Team who had witnessed the confrontation. We later learn that as with Mecha Frieza, the King's cells were collected by Doctor Gero 's device in order to create Cell . 👍

THE COLD KING IN THE OTHER SAGAS

In the Otherworld Saga, King Cold makes an appearance alongside Frieza, Cell and the Ginyu Commando (except Ginyu himself). The group of villains is busy trying to extract information from the guardians of the Underworld in hopes of leaving the area. Son Goku appears in order to stop them and Frieza immediately orders his men to attack the Saiyan. 🤜

The members of the Ginyu Commando are quickly defeated and Cell decides to take action by charging Son Goku in turn. Paikuhan intervenes and manages to knock out Cell with a single attack . The mysterious warrior continues his action by teleporting to the ground in order to inflict two powerful punches on Frieza and King Cold. The former galactic emperor is knocked out instantly and his father still manages to take a few steps before also collapsing to the ground.

Paikuhan continues with his tornado attack which has the effect of propelling the defeated bodies towards a mountain of spikes . Definitively defeated, King Cold and the other villains are once again locked in cells. 👌

The tyrannical king makes a new appearance in Dragon Ball GT during the Super C17 saga when he escapes from the Underworld with many other villains from the saga. However, he will be quickly defeated like the others and will be locked in his cell again. 😂

In the anime, we can see Cold again during Buu's saga , when from the Underworld, he observes the confrontation between Son Goku and Majin Buu. The fight is actually visible to many other villains using a giant crystal ball .

During the Broly movie , King Cold and Frieza go to planet Vegeta alongside Zarbon, Dodoria and the Ginyu Commando. The Galactic Tyrants demand the submission of the Saiyan people to King Vegeta . The scene takes place almost at the same time where King Cold transfers power to his son.

THE POWER OF KING COLD

In the manga and the anime, during his fight against Son Goku , Frieza mentions that apart from Goku, only his father during training had pushed him to his limits and thus revealed his final form . Although Cold's power wasn't specifically stated in the manga, the anime gives us more information about it. 📖

When Cold and Mecha Frieza arrive on Earth, the Z Team fighters immediately feel the great power of the two invaders . They sense Frieza's energy level and indicate a second source of power that is equivalent or even more powerful by referring to Cold.

It is now important to compare the powers of the king and his son. Mecha Frieza has a power of 120 million units , so we can assume that Cold has at least the same statistic. The power of the king is thus disproportionate if we take into account the fact that he is in his second form when Frieza has the same power in final form. As a reminder, the power of the emperor in his second form is approximately one million units . 💪

As Frieza, Cooler, Frost and the other members of this race have the ability to transform, we are able to think that King Cold may also have other evolved forms making him much more powerful. We can assume that if he does not transform during the fight against Trunks, it is simply to avoid a too long fight while the scene where he appears is supposed to serve as an expeditious prologue in order to introduce the saga Cyborgs. Trunks thus rushed the fight and thus did not give the king time to transform. ✨

Frieza's power is logically the reason which pushed Cold to transfer full powers to him, but this does not necessarily prove the superiority of the Emperor. The king gives advice and orders to his son at the beginning of the Cyborg saga and the latter is forced to obey. Frieza may have a deep respect for the hierarchy because he would have no qualms about eliminating his father if the latter really posed a threat. 💥

Additionally, in the film Resurrection of F , Frieza's henchmen propose to bring King Cold back to life but Frieza opposes this plan, fearing that his father wants to rule everything like back then.

With all this information, it is complicated to estimate whether King Cold or Frieza is more powerful .

Cooler is the second son of King Cold. He is Frieza's brother.

ATTACKS AND POWERS OF KING COLD

Telekinesis : This is a technique that allows the user to manipulate and levitate objects through thought. He taught this technique to his sons and notably used this power to destroy the windows of his ship when he exploded in rage. This is the moment when he learns that Frieza has surely been killed.

Dirty Slash : A basic technique where King Cod uses his sword to deliver a powerful blow to his opponent with the aim of cutting them in two.

Survival : Just like Frieza and Cooler, King Cold is capable of surviving in space. He also has the ability to survive extreme injuries. This is particularly the case in the anime when he has a hole in his chest but continues to speak calmly.

Super Death Ray : Same as one of Frieza's attacks. The user extends their index finger towards their target and then fires a powerful beam of energy.

Super Explosive Wave : King Cold charges his energy and triggers a powerful explosion all around him, destroying everything in the surrounding area.

Cold Family Power : This is King Cold's ultimate attack in the video game Budokai Tenkaichi 3. The character is joined by his son Mecha Frieza to make a duo attack. The two villains perform a combination melee attack and the king finishes off the enemy with a powerful explosive sword swing.

TRANSFORMATIONS

It is very likely that King Cold, like his sons and other members of his race, is indeed capable of transforming. Much like Frieza , it is possible that the King deliberately remains in his current form in order to better control and channel his power . This detail is not specified in the Dragon Ball Z manga and it is also possible that Cold does not have evolved forms. However, the universe of the saga shows us that members of Frieza's race are capable of transforming . ✨

King Cold, showing extreme arrogance against Trunks from the future, did not have time to demonstrate his true power and the Super Saiyan killed him instantly.

We therefore do not know if the appearance of Cold that we can see in Dragon Ball Z is his original form or if it is an evolution .

ANECDOTES ABOUT KING COLD

• As with Frieza and Cooler, King Cold 's name refers to very low temperatures.
• In the English dub, the character has a very pronounced British accent
• In Dragon Ball Z and the Battle of God movie , Frieza's parents are both mentioned by the latter. However, in certain video games including Budokai Tenkaichi 3, the Galactic Emperor only refers to his father without mentioning his mother. Furthermore, an audio commentary from Chi-Chi in the same game tells us that the education of Frieza and Cooler by their parents was very particular and disturbing. 🤔
• We do not know the physical appearance of King Cold's wife , but a comment from Chichi indicates that she may have a relatively similar appearance to her husband.
• although we do not know his exact height, King Cold is the tallest villain in all of Dragon Ball Z, not counting the films. In the manga, the character is approximately three times the size of Mecha Frieza . The anime, however, presents it with more or less variable sizes. In the video game Budokai Tenkaichi 3, King Cold is exactly the same size as Frieza's second form.
• He was the secret leader of Frieza's Forces , thus directing operations from the shadows. He was officially Emperor of Universe 7 before passing orders to his son Frieza.
• Bardock teaches us in the Broly movie from Dragon Ball Super that the Saiyans have always conquered planets with the aim of reselling them. King Cold eventually discovered this and decided to reduce the Saiyan people into slavery. The enslavement of these people is finally avenged when the king is killed by Trunks from the future. 🙏
